Early Life and Family

Kelley Armstrong, a renowned fantasy writer, was born in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. At nine months old, her family relocated to London, not the metropolis in England, but a city within the same province. Growing up in a middle-class household, she was the eldest of four children. Her father held a corporate office job, while her mother tended to domestic responsibilities. Despite the absence of artistic pursuits in the family, Armstrong's passion for storytelling emerged early on.

Education and Career Shift

Armstrong initially pursued a psychology degree at the University of Western Ontario, aspiring to become a clinical psychologist. However, as she approached graduation, she realized that this career would not allow her sufficient time for her literary endeavors. Consequently, she pivoted her career path and enrolled in Fanshawe College to study computer programming.

After completing her studies, she married and became a mother to a daughter. Working as a programmer at a bank, she continued to write in her spare time. In 1999, her manuscript for "Bitten" caught the attention of Viking Publishers.

"Bitten" and the "Otherworld" Series

"Bitten," published in 2001, marked Armstrong's debut novel and the inception of her "Women of the Otherworld" series. To date, the series comprises over a dozen novels and numerous short stories. Unlike many genre authors, Armstrong does not center her series on a single protagonist. For instance, the first, second, and sixth novels follow a werewolf named Elena Michaels, while the third and fourth feature a young witch named Paige Winterbourne, and the fifth is narrated by the ghost of a witch named Eve Levine. Armstrong emphasizes the flexibility of reading the novels in any order.

Critical Acclaim

Armstrong's work has garnered critical acclaim for its well-developed characters and fresh approach to familiar tropes. "Bitten" offers a unique exploration of werewolf psychology and social dynamics. The series also distinguishes itself by blending urban fantasy with thriller elements, with detective components playing a minimal role.

Inspiration and the Challenges of Success

Reflecting on the genesis of the "Otherworld" series, Armstrong shares, "I never planned 'Bitten' to be a series. It was designed as a standalone book that would resolve all the major plot questions. After it was sold, the question of continuing came up. Truthfully, I had mixed emotions. As much as I loved werewolves, I was hesitant to commit to an ongoing Elena series."
